From Systems to Trust: Data Management in the AI Era

On September 15, 2026, Athena Research Center as coordinator of DataGEMS project together and its lab, Darelab, successfully hosted the event “From Systems to Trust: Data Management in the AI Era” at the Athens University History Museum, bringing together a day of discussion around data management in the era of Artificial Intelligence.
The event featured four thematic sessions focusing on Intelligent Data Systems, Talking to Data, Data Discovery, and Trustworthy Data & AI, followed by the open panel discussion entitled “AI in the Service of Society”, which broadened the conversation to the opportunities, challenges, and social impact of AI.
The workshop included eight research presentations exploring how Artificial Intelligence is transforming data systems, enabling new forms of interaction through natural language, supporting the discovery and connection of data, and raising important questions around reliability and trust.
The workshop completed with a dedicated panel an open discussion namely “Artificial Intelligence in the Service of Society”, which invited participants to reflect on who benefits from AI, who bears the risks, and what responsibilities an open research infrastructure has towards the public that supports and funds it.
The panel members were the following:
• Dr. Thodoris Dalamagas, Director of the Information Management Systems Institute at Athena Research Center
• Dr. Georgia Koutrika, Research Director at Athena Research Center & Coordinator of the DataGEMS project
• Hara Vasiliadou, Cyber Security, Strategy & Commercial Solutions Director at QUALCO
• Dr. Vasiliki Kotroni, Research Director at the National Observatory of Athens
• George Rakitzis, Co-Founder & CTO at Mind the Hack
